7/7/08 - Assistance League of Salt Lake City Receives Community Service Award
On June 7, 2008, Margo Simmons, President of the Salt Lake City Chapter of Assistance League accepted the Community Service Award for an organization that is making a difference in our community. On behalf of the staff and students of Horizonte Instruction and Training Center, Salt Lake City School District, Principal Jim Andersen presented the award during the Center's commencement ceremony.
Emphasizing ALSLC's many outreach programs, Operation School Bell, Brighter Tomorrows, Operation Healthy Teeth, Book Bank, Kids on the Block, Act III, Baby Bundles, Mr. Andersen, speaking at the commencement, said that the organization is to be commended. Further, he stated, "Professional attire, scholarships to take the GED and incentives such as backpacks for our students, touched the lives of many at Horizonte. This type of recognition for our students truly makes a difference." Students and staff were excited that ALSLC provided opportunities for individuals who on their own do not have the means to access GED programs.
Finally, Andersen told the graduates and audience that it was "amazing" that the members of the ALSLC worked as "volunteers".
5/20/08 - Dorothy Anderson of American Express Honored as Consociates 2008 Woman of Distinction
On Saturday, May 3, 2008, Dorothy Anderson was honored for her community work throughout the Salt Lake Valley at the 15th Annual Consociates Auxiliary Women of Distinction Luncheon and Fundraiser, held at Hidden Valley Country Club.
Over 100 guests applauded Ms. Anderson as she recognized the "women of distinction" in her own family -- women who innately understood the need to help others less fortunate and who taught and led by example. Ms. Anderson also recognized Assistance League members as women of distinction for their ongoing contributions to the Salt Lake community. She concluded her speech by stating a long-held spiritual belief: "Whatever I have done or whatever I will do, God gets the glory." Consociates Chairman Karen Johnson presented Ms. Anderson with a crystal vase on a mirrored engraved pedestal, donated by O.C. Tanner.
Dorothy Anderson has worked for American Express for over 32 years. As a representative of American Express, she serves on many boards including Assistance League of Salt Lake City's Advisory Board. Ms. Anderson is responsible for managing American Express' Philanthropic Program for Salt Lake City and the State of Utah and for all community relations work as well as special events and activities.
Much-honored for her civic work, Ms. Anderson has also received the National Conference for Community and Justice Humanitarian Award, the Utah Philanthropy Corporate Spirit of Giving Award, the United Methodist Women's Missions Award and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Rosa Parks Award.

5/20/08 - Jewelry Event May 1-3 Huge Success
Thanks to all our wonderful customers for making our spring Mother's Day Jewelry Event a successful fund raiser. From Thursday May 1 through Saturday May 3, 2008, Assistance League raised $13,000 that will be directly used to fund our eight philanthropic programs, including Operation School Bell®. Our next jewelry event will be the holiday jewelry sale that takes place at the beginning of December.
4/14/08 - Assistance League Salt Lake City to be Honored by Horizonte
"Each year during the graduation ceremony Horizonte Instruction and Training Center awards two Community Service Awards, one to an individual who is making a difference in our community and one to an organization that is making a difference in our community," noted James Andersen, Principal. This year Assistance League of Salt Lake City has been chosen by the school council to receive the organizational award which will be presented Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 10 am. The award is based on Assistance League's 30-years' work clothing needy children in the Salt Lake Valley, recognizing Horizonte students with backpacks and other supplies and providing ongoing support for students preparing for and taking the GED exam.
