Membership > Assisteens
Assistance League founder, Anne Banning, always felt that it was fine to serve youth, but better to let youth serve. So in the 1930's she called on the daughters and granddaughters of Assistance League members to assist in various philanthropic projects.
We are proud to continue to encourage and provide volunteer opportunities for today's youth. The goals of participation are to develop a sense of community responsibility, self-reliance, personal responsibility, poise, public speaking and leadership skills.
In Salt Lake City, Assisteens membership is open to teens in grades 8 to 12. The teenage girls and boys in the Assisteens Auxiliary carry out their own special philanthropic program, as well as support the existing chapter programs and work in the Thrift on 33rd. Assisteens are charged with identifying their own philanthropic project and then raising money to fund it. An example of a philanthropic project might be a children's holiday party. During the holiday season, Assisteens might host a party for underprivileged children recommended to them by a local social services agency. The Assisteens would plan and prepare lunch, as well as plan games and craft activities, even a visit by "Santa Claus." By planning and implementing their own project, Assisteens members develop their creativity, resourcefulness, planning and follow through skills.
Assisteens meet once a month under the direction of a chapter member. They pay dues and raise funds to support their program. Best of all, they experience the joy of serving others in their community and of participating in a caring organization.
We are excited to offer this new program through the Assistance League of Salt Lake City and are looking forward to working with an enthusiastic group of Assisteens volunteers.
